The Full English

Posted in Family, Food, Health by joncrispin on 18/08/2013

I don’t post about food very often, but I feel like doing so today.

This weekend marks the start of the English Premiership season, and Peter and I follow our respective teams (Manchester United and Fulham) faithfully.  We texted back and forth yesterday during the Fulham and United wins.  He has an amazing mind for the game and when I asked him about Darren Bent, who is new to Fulham, this is what I got as a response.

So anyway, it is a lot of fun for us.  Pete doesn’t eat a lot of the stuff that I like, but he likes to live vicariously through me.  For the past few weeks he has been telling me that I need to have the “full English” sometime this weekend.  So I cooked one up this morning and it was one of the best.  I’m not too bothered about not having mushrooms, but everything else is there, including the fried bread, and the English Heinz beans.  If figure I’ll be OK if I limit myself to two or three of these a year.

    That plate looks so tidy! At my house, the beans have to be put on top of all the other stuff–that’s the way my English husband does it! (-;

    Brings back some good memories from my high-metabolism youth! I don’t see the black pudding though. Thanks for the smile and the vicarious calories.

      Fair enough Donna. When I’m in the UK I will occasionally have a black pud. I think it is more northern than southern. I had it in Scunthorpe once if I remember correctly. Thanks, Jon

    GAHHHH! Man, we miss the full English/Irish/Scots fry (well, Hank misses the meaty bits, anyway) and all that delightful grease! Sometimes you have to give your arteries a little scare just to know you’re alive, right?

    Perhaps the best one I ever had was fried up on an old Aga at about 2am, in a lovely old crofter’s cottage on an island in Scotland after a night of banter and particularly lovely single malt. And served with more single malt. Followed by the best sleep under the fluffiest down comforter ever made. Amazing!

      Oh man Hank (L)! That sounds like an experience. Banter>whiskey>greasy food>whiskey>banter>sleep>dreams. / And when I buy a cottage in Cornwall it better have an Aga or the deal’s off.

    Oh yeah, that one’s definitely worth the extra half-hour stroll.

    Even the fried bread – that’s impressive! We know where to get good black pudding if you ever want to add that to the plate! 🙂
