Pears Soap

Posted in ephemera, Health by joncrispin on 06/05/2013

My favorite soap is Pears.  I have used it for the last 25 or so years.  Some time ago the company was bought by Unilever and the original formula was changed.  I noticed a difference as did most other users.  (Here’s a link to an amusing piece in the Guardian.)  I was bummed, but have gotten used to the new smell and feel.  Yesterday I was cleaning out my bathroom cabinets and came across this soap dish way in the back on a shelf.  When I opened it I was happy to find a bar of the original Pears that had been abandoned well before the change.  /  It’s the little things, I guess, that sometimes can make life a bit brighter.

Seems the older we get the more changes we have to make in order to keep up with everything new that will always be changing, improving hopefully, but we all get stuck into habits of sight, sound, smell and the rest. My curiousity makes me wonder if the price has increased with this new formula as well….. robyn.lynn0@sbcglobal.net

Hi Robyn, Surprisingly enough, here in Massachusetts you can buy them really cheap at Ocean State JobLot. Much cheaper than in the UK. Thanks for your comment. jon

    Indeed, they can!
As a big fan and long-time user of Pear’s, I disliked the formula change too.

I love Pears sopa too form when I was a child. I understand that someone opposed to the new Pears formulation started a Facebook campaign to restore the original formula. It worked! They’ve gone back to the old Pears. woo hoo!

My favorite was Palmolive soap. About three years ago they changed the formula. But I still have the last, dwindling bar up at our summer lake house, and look forward to showering there again soon!

I used Pears soap for years until they changed the formula. I could not stand the fragrance and the feel of the soap was different. And I noted that the soap was no longer made in the UK. This is life – changes. But at least we have photography to take us back to the memories.
