Vivian Maier Movie
I have been wanting to see “Finding Vivian Maier” for a while, so I caught a matinee in Amherst this afternoon. It is an interesting piece of work and I would really recommend anyone interested in art and photography to see it. It goes in a different direction than I thought it would, but that is never bad in itself. Her work was amazing though, and what John Maloof has done in putting this all together is nothing short of remarkable. / It is rare that it happens, but catching a movie in the afternoon can sometimes be just the ticket.
its showing in Portland this weekend, its on my list!
Really looking forward to seeing this, finally. Glad you could catch it, Jon!
Isn’t it amazing how very easily all of her work could have disappeared for good, especially considering no one knew or cared that it existed when she was alive? I mean, she was prolific, right? And completely anonymous. Even if this was partly by her choice and profession, it also because that’s how it works. (You can probably imagine how I used to crack up a bit in archaeology/anthropology classes, when every single made object or work of art was ascribed to male artists, male builders, male makers. Anything slightly female-ish had to do with a “fertility cult” or some such. Sheesh! As if those delicate ladies never really stepped into their own worlds and created cool stuff outside of babies.)
Makes me wonder how many Vivian Maiers have come and gone throughout the millennia of human evolution. I’m guessing the number is high.
It is not likely to be at the cinema here in the south of France… Perhaps one day I shall find it on DVD?
Been waiting for so long to see this.
Next weekend is it!! So excited!
I just had the opportunity to see the movie yesterday and was so glad that I did. I found it quite bittersweet in many ways, liked getting to know John Maloof and his journey and came to respect him all the more… and really was thrilled to have Joel Meyerowitz’s voice commenting on Vivian’s amazing body of work. And I really enjoyed seeing her images and more of her movies….
I had recently learned about her and heard about an exhibit and I think a book. No idea there was a movie, I’ll have to see if I am find it playing somewhere near.
John, did you see Malcolm Jones piece in the Daily Beast? I haven’t seen the movie yet, but his article was thought provoking. http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/04/24/vivian-maier-still-missing.html
