Wilson, NC
We stopped for gas at the northernmost Wilson, NC exit. I wonder what this interesting abandoned building once was.

Great building! That pull of the abandoned– reminds of me of a line in the poem I wrote about why I loved garbage picking: “Cities gone from the map/become mine.” Happy New Year, Jon!
And a happy new year to you as well, Karen. I really hope we get to see more of each other in 2018.
Did you ask anyone at the gas station what the building was? Whenever you’re in a place and want to learn something like that, ask the oldest person you see. Old people know stuff.
It was a weird BP gas station and half the pumps were not working. Just off I95 and they were wildly busy. But I really like your idea of asking an older person! Thanks for the comment. Jon
Sounds like a scary gas station I stopped at once in Iowa. There probably wasn’t anyone who cared enough to know. BUT the old person advice stands. Especially if you have a question about anything in a hardware store. Find the old guy. He knows stuff!
Happy New Year, Jon. I love your work, and your dog. More pictures of her, please.
Looks like it was a school – did some internet sleuthing and found court/property records from the late ’70s referring to a six classroom brick schoolhouse, operated since 1923 and known as “Lamm’s School”, being located at that address.
Even found an (undated, but clearly very old) picture of the building online:

I am amazed. Commiebobdole, great sleuthing. Thank you so much! Happy new year and all best to you.
you are correct! The school was Lamm”s School. It was recently demolished. I was raised in a farm house beside the old school. I miss seeing it there when I pass by.
Dear Max, thanks for the comment. So sad that it has been demolished. It was a unique building. All best, Jon
Amazing building, must have been a nice looking school is Commiebobdole is right. I used to have to do historical searches on properties, in Canada libraries have something called phone directories and you could look up the occupant of a building by address. I loved these especially since commercial buildings are often occupied by something other than the property owner.
Happy New Year Jon, I love following this blog.
