Jon Crispin's Notebook

Washington Nationals v Miami Marlins

I usually attempt to put up posts in a timely manner, but Peter and I got home very late after the game on Thursday and I was up and on the road back home by 7.00 AM on Friday.  Yesterday I drove to Gillette Stadium to shoot the UMASS football game which was pretty much a 12 hour day.

I generally dislike sports mascots, but the presidents at Nationals Park are so cool.  And Teddy is the coolest.  Good thing he has his pince nez on so he can see the selfie that this guy took.

It was Hispanic Heritage Day, and it was nice that some of my favorite players were mentioned in the pregame ceremonies, including Roberto Clemente

Peter and I scored $5.00 tickets (the best deal in baseball) and sat in our favorite section (402).

It was pretty sparse up there.

It was a perfect night for baseball; about 70 degrees with a lovely breeze.

Apologies to my vegan/vegetarian friends, but another great thing about section 402 is that there is a Ben’s Chili Bowl at the bottom of the stairs.  If you like sausages, the “half smokes” are the bomb.

This is my favorite baseball situation.  Bases loaded, 2 outs, 3 balls and two strikes on the batter.  The runners are going on the pitch (if you look closely, you can see the ball on the way to the batter.)  In this case, Ian Desmond ripped a single into right field and two runs scored.  The Nats lost 6 – 4 and are barely hanging in for a playoff spot. Maybe next year.

Ben’s Chili Bowl / Codmother

I’m in DC for the weekend before heading out to Tilghman for a few days.  Last night Peter and I went over to U Street for some eats.  I couldn’t be this close to Ben’s without stopping in for a Half Smoke.  It was amazing.

Afterwards, he wanted to take me to Codmother for fish and chips.  What a place.  Great fish though.

As I was driving down of Friday and listening to BBC Radio 4, I heard this commentary by A.L. Kennedy and found it interesting.  You can either read it here, or better yet listen to the podcast here. I found it very touching.

Ben’s Chili Bowl and MLK Speech Anniversary

Peter and I had an interesting “one-two” today.  We had lunch at Ben’s Chili Bowl (amazing) and then headed down to the Mall to check out the events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the “I have a dream speech”.  Ben’s had CSPAN on so we were able to see some of the proceedings on TV which was really great.

We got to the area near the Washington Monument just as the President started speaking.  We were way back, but it was nice to be a part of the crowd.  I really love DC.  It is such an interesting  city.

I also want to add a note to yesterday’s post.  The document in the Shanghai Garden window is actually a “permit to raze”, which really bums me out.  Once that little building is gone, it is gone for good.  I am so glad I got to grab a photo before it was demolished.
