Beach Flower

It is wonderful to come to a place in the month of January where wild plants are still flowering. In all our miles of walking the beach, this was the only blossom we have seen.
Anyone out there have any idea what plant this is?
New Page

I have just created a direct link to all of the suitcase posts for those of you who have very little interest in my dog, or the other bits of my life that I like to post here. If you look to the column on the right →, under “Pages” you will see a link to “All Willard Suitcase Posts”. I hope that it makes it easier for folks who are looking for all the suitcases in one place. I will still upload all suitcase stuff to this site.

We are in South Carolina for a bit and seeing tons of interesting wildlife. This bobcat was just hanging around on the deck yesterday.

And this little lizard was on one of the dining room chairs.

Olive has been swimming every day, and it doesn’t take much to get her to nap between dips.
Happy New Year’s everyone, thanks for following, and be well. Cheers, Jon
Star / Higgins Beach

We are up in Maine for a few days. The Christmas tree came down earlier today and some of the stars fell off on the way out of the house.

Cris, Olive, and I had a lovely walk on Higgins Beach just before the sun went down.
I’ll try to post before the New Year, but if I don’t get the chance, happy end of 2015 to all of you, and best for 2016
Flying

Let’s see if this works. I took this a few hours ago as I was boarding my flight from Long Beach (coolest airport in the country) to Boston.

It took a while to upload this second photo, but I’ll hit publish in a minute. It is now 11.22 West Coast Time.
What a world.
California Hospital Association
On Tuesday I spoke to the annual California Hospital Association Behavioral Health Conference about the suitcases. I can’t stress enough how wonderful (and unusual) it is for an organization such as the CHA to use the project to make a connection between art, and the people who work on the front lines of mental health issues. I set up 30 mounted photographs which were on display all day, and got the chance to talk to a lot of interesting folks about the project. California seems to be at the forefront of addressing behavioral health issues, which is very encouraging. A huge shout out and thank you to Sheree Kruckenberg and her amazing staff.

Dropped the rental car off this afternoon and on the walk back to Lynne’s saw a ton of these bird(s?) of paradise. Catching the red eye home tonight.
Mandarin Orange / Christmas in Orange County

I flew into Long Beach yesterday evening, and am staying with family in Tustin. It was surprisingly cool last night and early this morning, but the day warmed up nicely. This morning I walked outside with Lynnie and she said that the mandarines were ripe and ready to pick. It was the most amazing piece of fruit that I have ever eaten. Indescribable.

Tonight we went out for a bite to eat at Playground in Santa Ana and on the way home took a detour to check out some Christmas decorations. Remarkable.
On Tuesday morning I will be talking about the suitcases to the California Hospital Association’s annual behavioral health symposium in Riverside. I’ll be posting more about the event in the next day or two.
Another Connecticut Avenue Apartment Building

Here’s another Connecticut Avenue apartment building. Clearly of a different era from the ones I posted this morning.
Sulgrave Manor / La Reine

Cris and I are in DC for a few days visiting Peter. There are so many nice apartment buildings along Connecticut Avenue, and these two caught my eye this morning.

These residential prewar buildings are so common throughout the district. They sure don’t build ’em like they used to.
Pansy / Cyclamen

Even with the recent freezing nights, there are still some pansies in bloom outside.

This cyclamen lives outside in the warm months, and we bring it in before the first freeze. It always starts blooming as soon as it comes in the house.
To those of you who celebrate the day, have a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving.
Acorn

Olive and I had a nice walk in the woods today. There are so many oak leaves on the ground, and lots of acorns. It looks like rain later today, and then another sunny day tomorrow.

If there is water to be found, she will be in it.
