Coal Harbour Vancouver

harbourair

I walked down to the harbour yesterday afternoon.  There was a break in the rain so it was a nice time to watch the Harbour Air planes take off and land.  I found myself thinking that if one were a pilot, this would be the best job in the world.  And I love the floating Chevron station.

Although this plane was Westcoast Air.  Back home tomorrow.  This visit was much too short.

Flying

Let’s see if this works.  I took this a few hours ago as I was boarding my flight from Long Beach (coolest airport in the country) to Boston.

It took a while to upload this second photo, but I’ll hit publish in a minute.    It is now 11.22 West Coast Time.

What a world.

Mass Pike / Willard Suitcases / Rodrigo L / Rochester

Posted in Cities, driving, History, Mental Health, Rivers, Travel by joncrispin on 07/10/2015

I started the day very early driving west on the Mass Pike on my way to shoot suitcases.

We were able to learn quite a bit about Rodrigo from his papers.  He came to Salt Lake City from the Philippines to attend high school.

He was always active in Filipino organizations in the US.  After Salt Lake, he moved to Chicago for a time, then onto Buffalo before ending up at Willard.

I did a quick search for Herbert Ray Olmsted and found this on RootsWeb.

Love Herbert’s stylish handwriting.

I am in an EconoLodge in Brockport, NY on my way to meet some Erie Canal folks to spend tomorrow shooting the autumn inspection of some of the locks east of Buffalo.  Stopped in Rochester for a bite to eat just as the evening was arriving.

Van Ness Metro Station

I’m in DC for a few days visiting Peter. / The Metro is starting to show its age, but is still a pretty amazing system, and most of the stations photograph pretty well.  I love public transport.

Off to see the Nationals tomorrow night, then home on Friday.

Montreal / WWC

We were in Montreal for the Germany / France match on Friday.  It was fun being in the city again.

It was a bit odd walking back into the Olympic Stadium.  We had been there while the Expos were still playing, and Peter mentioned that the last time we saw a game there he was sure we would never set foot in the place again (The franchise moved to DC after the 2004 season).  It is a shame that they put a roof on it, as watching outdoor sporting events in a covered venue is a somewhat unnatural.  And the place still smells of garlic fries and burgers.  But it was a great match, with Germany winning on penalties 1-1 (5-4).  We were all rooting for France, but the atmosphere was fantastic, and it was great to see a World Cup match in person.

On Saturday morning we went to the Botanical Garden and hung out with Peggy Ross and her husband Peter.  Great little bonsai collection.

Peter has been following Formula One for a few years now, and we had heard that anyone could drive around on the actual circuit.  It is so cool, as it is divided so that one lane is for automobiles (max 30 kph) and the other is for bicycles, roller blades, other non-motorized conveyances and people who just want to walk.  And it shows up on the GPS.  Turn right in 0.6 miles!

Here’s the Element at the back of the starting grid.

Long Beach (LGB)

Flew to California last night.  I love the Long Beach airport.  You can disembark through the front or the back of the plane and walk to the terminal on the tarmac. Very old school.

Ben’s Chili Bowl / Codmother

Posted in Beer, Fish, Food, Travel by joncrispin on 25/01/2015

I’m in DC for the weekend before heading out to Tilghman for a few days.  Last night Peter and I went over to U Street for some eats.  I couldn’t be this close to Ben’s without stopping in for a Half Smoke.  It was amazing.

Afterwards, he wanted to take me to Codmother for fish and chips.  What a place.  Great fish though.

As I was driving down of Friday and listening to BBC Radio 4, I heard this commentary by A.L. Kennedy and found it interesting.  You can either read it here, or better yet listen to the podcast here. I found it very touching.

Olive at the Beach

Due to the wonderful generosity of my brother and sister-in-law, we are back at the beach in South Carolina.  This is Olive’s first visit to the ocean.

She took to it like a champ.  Full blast, right into the water and ran like the wind.  Here she is during her first encounter with a horseshoe crab.  Initially she was cautious, but after a minute she just barked at it until we lured her away with biscuits.  She is really becoming a great dog.

Kalamazoo Asylum for the Insane

After my fantastic visit to Wittenberg University I drove up to Kalamazoo, Michigan to visit my great friend Ken Schaefer.  We were taking a tour of Western Michigan University, where he works, and I looked to the south and saw this.  Amazing.  The State Hospital has an interesting history, and dates back to the earliest of New York State’s asylums.  The only building that remains from the original Kirkbride plan buildings is the water tower, and it is huge.

Driving back home tomorrow.  It is about 14 hours and I might break it up back in Erie.  We’ll see.
