Jon Crispin's Notebook

Penguin Books

Posted in Animals, Dogs, Family by joncrispin on 31/05/2013

I’ve been thinking of my late parents quite a bit recently.  The photograph is of my father’s family.  They moved from Cornwall in the UK to Central City, Colorado where I believe this shot was taken.  Dad turned me on to the Scottish writer John Buchan, and I have a large collection of his books; mostly hardbacks, but a few in these lovely old Penguin editions.  These  beautiful art deco bookends are marked “Genuine Rocky Mountain Alabaster” and come from Kohlberg’s / Denver, which I assume is or was some sort of a shop.

Pearl had some pretty heavy duty surgery on Tuesday.  She had a large mast cell tumor on her side and it really needed to come off.  Our wonderful vet Deb Lichtenberg thought it was a good thing to do, and we are glad we went through with it.  The recovery has been going well so far.  Off to get the temporary drain removed this afternoon and then another ten days before the stitches come out.   I took this shot a few days before the operation.  We never let her up on the furniture until about a year ago, but hey, she’s 12 and we want her happy.

More Pearl

A bit of “karma congestion” lately.  So as a default I feel like doing a Pearl post.  We never let her up on the furniture until about a year ago, but now she seems to have claimed the center section of this sofa.  It is really nice to have the wood stove going with her asleep next to you.

Cris was putting some wrapped presents under the tree yesterday, and Pearl went right to this “Mega P’nut” dog treat.  She got an early gift.

Peter is home from DC and he and I took her for a walk today.  I know I have posted a similar photo, but for some reason this still gets to me.  She wants to carry her leash everywhere.

This past year has been monumental in many ways, and next year could be equally interesting.  My very best wishes to all of you who follow this blog.  I’ll get back to some serious stuff soon, but in the meantime, ’tis the season to be thinking about friends and family and have lots of love in your hearts.

Cheers, Jon

Walk

The Pearl and I had a nice walk late this afternoon.  It was, as they say “seasonably warm”.  The cattails are starting to go to seed, or whatever it is they do.

As usual, she found some water on the way back to the car and I was happy to have an old towel to dry her off.  She is a great dog.

Tiny Tree / Big Leaves

Posted in Nature, Plants, Seasons, Trees, Weather by joncrispin on 03/10/2012

I had a nice walk with the Pearl just now.  Our usual spot with the scummy pond (no ducks today).  The leaves are starting to change and even though it is a foggy, muggy, warm day it is beginning to feel like the autumn.

There is still quite a bit of green in the trees, but the light at the end of the day is way more toward yellow than it was just last week.

Something New

This post is a way to jump-start my brain.  I have been so preoccupied with Peter that it has been difficult to concentrate on anything else.  It feels great to be focusing on photographs again.  None of these pictures seem so interesting on their own, but together reflect what’s been going on for the past month.

Above is Tom Schack’s birthday cake from the now infamous “Schackstock” at Snowzies in Sunderland.  Bands started playing at 1 pm and things shut down at closing time.  His Mom, Dad, and Sister were there as well as lots of his friends.

He is just about the nicest guy in the world, and was really enjoying himself.

This flower starts showing up partway down the drive in early August.

When I was shooting the Tilghman project in August I made sure to visit Miss Pigsley.  She lives down the street from Jennifer, has an air conditioner in her shed and will never be bacon.  I took this for Peter because we are both huge P.G. Wodehouse fans and any stories with Lord Emsworth feature his obsession with “The Empress”.  This pig is magnificent and is very happy to have visitors.  She used to drink massive amounts of Kool-Aid until the vet put her on a diet.

On the Sunday morning before Peter Carroll and I left the island, we went to the church to document a service.  This gentleman was in the pew in front of me.

I have always liked cattails.

When Cris, Pete, and I went to see the Sox in August, the Olympics were going on and this guy was checking out the US Women’s Soccer action.  Technology!

I had a hard time getting the white balance right in this shot.  I walk past this box on my way to shoot the suitcases.  It always reminds me of  this Little Feat song.

Going back to Meadville means more than hot dogs and ice cream but two stops are essential; Eddie’s and Hank’s Frozen Custard.

I have been going to Hank’s since it opened in 1952.

Peter loves it too.

There is only one reason to post this photo.  It might be the only time you can see Red Sox pitcher Clayton Mortensen at bat in an American League Park.  At this point the Sox were up something like 12-1 and I still can’t figure out why Bobby Valentine had him at the plate.  Kind of cool though.

When we were at Pymatuning watching the ducks walk on the fishes backs we met the woman I posted about earlier.  She was wearing this shirt which got us talking.  I’d like to visit sometime.

It is very rare to be in on an historical moment, but I can say I was there when one of my neighborhood friends coined the term “Rat Lake” for the body of water that appeared after the flood control dam was built.

I usually help Thom Kendall out with the photos on media day for the UMASS football team.  The new coach is a really great guy.  This picture pretty much tells you most of what you need to know about Charley Molnar.

The Pearl out on the deck.

Cris and I went to Amherst Coffee today.  I often take a shot of my cappuccino for some reason.

Never one to hide my emotions, I have been mentioning to just about anyone I talk to about my feelings of having Peter off in DC.  So many of you have told me that he will be fine, and I want to thank you all for your support.  One of the best bits of encouragement came from Leamuse in France as a comment on my earlier post.  “Bon courage et bon chance.”  Thank you so much; it really helps.

Pearl and her bowl

Posted in Animals, Dogs, Family, Food by joncrispin on 24/01/2012

In many ways Pearl is a true retriever.  She is not obsessed with balls or sticks but she really loves her bowl.  Since she was young she would eat and then pick it up and carry it around the house.  We never know where it will end up, and sometimes in the morning it is a pain to have to look for it.  About a year ago, I began to make her go find it before I would feed her.  She is mostly good at it, but sometimes she brings me one of her stuffed animals instead.  But she has figured out that bringing me the bowl means she gets to eat so there is some incentive for her.  The only problem is that at random times throughout the day she will get the bowl and carry it around expecting a meal.  I can mostly ignore it, but once in a great while I succumb to her cuteness and give in.

Pearl

Posted in Animals, Dogs, Family by joncrispin on 30/12/2011

For some reason, Pearl has become very attached to her leash.  When we walk down to the bottom of our street, we need one to cross the Amherst Road.  Just this past summer, she started wanting to carry it in her mouth.  If I have it in my hand, she keeps nudging me until I give it to her.  She is the sweetest dog.

Walk

Posted in Family, Fungi, Plants by joncrispin on 18/09/2011

Cris and the Pearl and I went up into the woods today.  My sister Karen once told me what this ↑ little guy is called , but it didn’t stick with me.  Any help, anyone?  They are very delicate and tiny. /  And due to all the recent rain, the fungi are everywhere.

I can’t remember seeing one like this ↑ before.  It is very white.

August Walk

Posted in Dogs, Family, Flowers, Plants by joncrispin on 22/08/2011

Peter, Pearl, and I had a lovely late afternoon walk today.  Goldenrod, cattails, and loosestrife.

It was breezy and cool, and the light was beautiful.

Lots of queen anne’s lace, too.

Dragonfly

Cris and I went for a walk with the Pearl this afternoon.  This dragonfly landed on her hat and was kind enough to hang around while I took some shots.
